Therapy for Childhood Abuse
In-Person in Phoenix & Virtually throughout Arizona
What happens to us in childhood shapes us in ways we often don't fully understand until we're adults, when we find ourselves reacting in ways that don't quite make sense, struggling in relationships, or carrying weight we can't quite name. Childhood abuse, whether physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect, leaves marks that are real even when they're invisible. You didn't deserve what happened. And healing, even decades later, is possible.
An Understanding Space to Talk about Trauma
No judgment. No pressure to have it all figured out. Whether you're navigating anxiety, big life changes, relationship stress, faith questions, or just a general sense of something feels off — you're welcome here exactly as you are.
You Set the Pace
Healing from childhood abuse isn't linear, and there's no timeline you need to meet. We'll go as slowly as you need to — building safety and trust before anything else.Making Sense of the Long Shadow
Childhood experiences shape our nervous systems, our attachment patterns, our beliefs about ourselves and others. Understanding those connections doesn't just explain the past, it changes how you move forward.Working Toward Integration
The goal isn't to forget what happened or to stop being affected by it. It's to reach a place where your past doesn't dictate your present — where you have more choice, more freedom, more of yourself.

What to Expect in Your First Session
The first session is a chance for both of us to get to know each other — and to figure out whether we might be a good fit for therapy together.
There's no script, no pressure, and no expectation that you'll walk in with everything figured out. You don't need to have the "right" words for what you're feeling, and you're not expected to share everything at once. What we cover is entirely based on your comfort level and what feels most important to you right now.
I'll ask some questions to get a sense of your experience — what's been going on, what brought you in, and what you're hoping for. Some of those questions might be easy to answer. Others might take a minute. That's okay. We go at your pace.
By the end of our first session, you'll have a clearer sense of how I work and whether it feels like the right fit. And if it does, we'll start talking about what it might look like to work together.
A few things you can count on from the very first session:
You won't be judged for what you share — or what you're not ready to share yet
Nothing you say leaves the room (with a few standard legal exceptions I'll walk you through)
You get to decide how deep we go
If you're nervous — that's normal. Most people are. You just have to show up.
FAQs
What if I don't remember much about my childhood?
1
Memory gaps are common after childhood trauma. We don't need complete memories to do meaningful work — we work with what's present, including body responses, patterns, and what you do remember.
Is this telehealth or in-person?
2
Sessions are available in person in Phoenix, Arizona or virtually throughout the state of Arizona.
Does it matter how long ago it happened?
3
No. Childhood wounds don't have an expiration date. People do meaningful healing at every age.
What if I have complicated feelings about the people who hurt me?
4
That's almost universal. Grief, love, anger, and confusion can coexist. We'll make space for all of it.
Will you accept insurance?
5
Philoxenia Counseling is a private-pay practice. We do not bill insurance directly, but can provide documentation for out-of-network reimbursement if your plan allows it.
Is this the same as trauma therapy?
6
Yes, childhood abuse is a form of trauma, and we'll approach it that way. The methods are trauma-informed and paced for your specific experience.
